Teaching at Horizon Academy
Teaching at Horizon Academy has been a great experience for me. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction and pleasure to make a difference in the lives of students. When students come to us they have various problems. Most are confused as to what they want to do in life. There are all kinds of students -- abusive, unmotivated, adamant, snobbish, and at times also into bad habits like drugs. Parents are worried about their future and they put immense trust in us to help their children become better individuals.
We (read teachers) help students identify their worth and make them aware of their duties towards their parents and society at large. Students are given best facilities and systematic educational programs at Horizon Academy. They have a pre-defined schedule and are given time for both studies and extra-curricular activities. They make friends, take part in competitions, eat and stay together while preparing themselves for life’s challenges. To guide them and help them solve their problems teachers are always there. Many students are very aggressive when they join us as they picture being at the academy as some kind of punishment. But it is great to see the same students getting emotional at the time of their farewell. There is a great positive change in them.
I share a friendly-and warm relation with my students and have observed that it is not difficult to make even the most difficult student listen to you. What is required is a little patience and love. Being strict is okay at times but I personally don't think that teachers should be strict with students all the time.
Students need to be motivated constantly to excel. I have learned that even two words of appreciation can go a long way in changing students’ attitude. Students must be given constant feedback and must understand their improvement areas to work towards those. I often have one to one sessions with weak and shy students to help them overcome their problems. It has always worked. To make teaching and learning a fun experience I try to make it interactive by making students participate. At times when students are unable to understand certain concepts, I try to simplify things and explain through examples. But believe me; it is not easy to explain the same thing over and over gain when students don't understand. Luckily this happens with me rarely.
In my teaching career, I have provided guidance to many students by listening to their problems. When ex-students write to me about their life’s experiences and ask about my well-being it is a great feeling. I am enjoying being a teacher at Horizon Academy and share a great bond with my students.
